We stand with Ukraine and condemn Vladmir Putin for his acts of aggression!
As we watched in horror the bombing of the reactor in Ukraine and the ongoing horrors, we were reminded of past nuclear disasters, and our reaction to them. At that time, we dug out our old Geiger counter that we bought at a mad scientist garage sale and began daily radiation readings. We are now doing that again! We will also be pairing the daily radiation reading with a reading recommendation to form Rad Readings.
The radiation readings are once daily for one minute in our North Seattle location. Each reading will be for one minute at some point during the day (I’m not much for punctuality :-). The report will be the maximum MR/HR count that was reached, and the actual audio count that I record. Please note that I have never calibrated this Geiger counter, it’s an analog dial, and I’m counting audio beats while watching the dial, so the readings do have some error built into them. However over time they should provide a good idea of what the real background radiation is, and show if there is any increase due to world events.
We do receive a commission for the links to Amazon from this site. Initially we attempted to set up a Powell’s, world’s largest independent bookstore, account; however their affiliate signup was confusing, we signed up with Amazon, which has made it fairly easy for small businesses such as ourselves.
More information about radiation and what the readings mean can be found below:

For reference according to the EPA, the average person in the US receives 620 millirems of radiation per year from sources in the environment.
Get your own Gieger counter here. We did recently update this page to use a table, and we’re not going to add previous readings from old posts, if you really want to see them you can find them here. You can also find images of all the recommended Rad Reading book covers here.
